Risks and concerns

It is very important to watch carefully and assess the risk so as to protect the child. At the same time, it is important not to be suspicious about all people or professionals working with children before you have seriously assessed and discussed any concerns on the subject with another person.
Practice has shown that more than 90% of children who report having being abused are telling the truth.
It is extremely important to be careful about the content of the movies and TV shows that children come across.
It is also important what expressions and words we use in front of them.
What to do if your child confides in you something related to sexual abuse?
The place: Try to find a secluded and protected place to talk to the child.
Your behavior: Sharing such a secret is something that evokes many strong emotions. It is important to try to control yourself as much as possible. If you have difficulty and need it, contact a relative or professional to support you. In order for such a disclosure to take place in the most sparing way possible, try not to panic or show your shock in the conversation with the child.
What to tell the child:
- Assure them that you trust them.
- Explain that whatever another adult has done is not their fault and that the child is not bad and has done nothing wrong.
- Tell them that it must have been very difficult for them to say all this, and note how right they were and how brave were.
- Make sure he is safe, ask him if he is afraid of something at this time and support him to feel safer. If the situation requires, seek the help of other people or institutions so that the child can be in a safe and secure environment.
- During the conversation, help the child mostly with questions, not assumptions! Who did it, where, what did it do to you? Don't ask the question "Why?", because that in itself implies an accusation. Name things by their real names and use the child's vocabulary.
- Don't promise things you can't do. Assure the child that you will do everything possible to protect them. Explain what you will do from now on, tell them that you need to alert the relevant authorities.
When we are in the role of a trusted adult and have a child sharing the "secret of their abuse" it is very important to know that:
- Often children tend to reveal the "secret", but with certain conditions: "I have a problem, but if I tell you about it, you will have to promise not to tell anyone else."
- Most children are well aware that there will be negative consequences if they violate the secret of its abuse (there will be interrogation, investigation, punishment of someone).
- Very often the perpetrator uses threats with consequences for the child and thus forces them to remain silent.
- Just as abuse in itself is illegal, it is also illegal not to report child abuse.
- It is important that you respect confidentiality by discussing the abuse of those directly involved in the legal and child-supporting process. These people can be the social worker from the child protection department, the investigator, the police officer, the nurse, the teacher, the "lady", the director of the kindergarten.
