Myths and Reality

Sexual abuse is one of the biggest fears of parents, it is a very serious problem in society and happens more often than we think.
    Myth: Sexual abusers are strangers.
Reality: Often the abuser knew the child long before and first built a trusting relationship with them. Sexual abuse is most often a process and begins with building relationships and gaining the trust of the child as well as the family - this is the so called “grooming”. It is important understand and consider that in most cases children know their abusers. This can also be close acquaintances of the family and relatives. Sexual abuse can often occur in a safe environment at home, on a visit, or in kindergarten or school. It is important to pay attention to the fact that the abuser can check the boundaries of a child by "unwillingly" touching them in the intimate area in the presence of other adults.
Myth: Abusers look strange and are lonely.
Reality: Abusers can be of different types, genders and there is no way to clearly distinguish them. It is important that the child is prepared to react immediately. The abuser may have a relationship or even a marriage with a person his age. Although the percentage of male sexual abusers is much higher, the abuser could also be a female. Adolescents can also be sexual abusers.
Myth: Sexual violence has to do with sexual intercourse only.
Reality: Sexual abuse can also involve unwanted sexual touch, showing intimate parts or showing sexualized material that is inappropriate for the child's age and development. Although violence may not involve contact, it can still have serious psychological and emotional consequences for the child.
Myth: Children on the Internet are safe from sexual abuse.
Reality: Between the ages of 2 and 6, children can also come across sexualized content. Many parents leave their children to watch Youtube on their own, and when they start watching a favorite video, they may come across videos and movies that are not suitable for them. Therefore, it is important to check the settings of the social network, the site and see what settings are available to restrict access to such content.
