Child development
At this age, the physical development of children is not as rapid as in the first three years of life. In terms of motor skills, around the age of four the child develops coordination and fine movements, due to which he or she is able to serve themselves - to dress, undress and eat. Cognitively, the child still enriches his or her speech, but still thinks concretely and understands things literally. He or she actively explores and attempts to change the environment around them. They can plan their games and their play leads to building a sense of initiative and accomplishment. However, experiencing repeated failures and lack of support from adults can lead to feelings of failure, insecurity and guilt. Healthy development leads to the belief: "I am what I can imagine I will be."
At this age, the child should be able to distinguish between fantasy and reality, but fantasy still has a leading place. He or she has difficulty understanding complex expressions and metaphorical explanations. He or she has difficulty imagining what another person thinks or feels, usually assuming that what is in his mind is the same in other people's minds. That is why it is very important to give them explanations of our own motives when we force them to do something and to give examples. Imitation games are becoming a favorite in this period!
At this age, the relationship between the child and his or her peers are developing significantly. The child is inclined to show his or her feelings to the adults around him without worries without hesitation. The age is very typical with interest in gender differences as well as questions such as "How do babies appear?" That is why it is suitable to start a conversation about sexuality and the risk of violence in an appropriate manner.
